It’s been quite a while!! I have been swamped, but LOVING my new position. Sorry to have neglected you guys!

I have somewhat of an update on my Numbers Galore resource. I have been getting TONS of questions and requests and as much as I would love to be able to accommodate all of them, time just doesn’t allow it! So, I thought I would share all the versions I’ve made so far and maybe that would help a lot of people. It’ll be a long one, but remember they’re FREE! Here we go:

Numbers Galore – ORIGINAL version
This version has both Print font and D’Nealian-style font. But, for now…this is what we’ve got! :)

One question that I get a lot is “What are the circles on the right for?” This is essentially part-part-whole. The number provided (ex: 8) is the whole and students can put any two numbers that add up to the whole in the two part circles (ex: 3 and 5, 4 and 4, 1 and 7, etc.). Hope that makes sense!

If you have further suggestions or ideas, please let me know!
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01912117528655414246noreply@blogger.com60tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4852170201325394014.post-83503363999488381802012-09-11T20:13:00.001-05:002012-09-11T20:13:18.202-05:00Giveaway over at Technology Tailgate!
Hey friends! I mean, let’s think about it. We are adults, who have probably encountered many different situations and environments. But, we still are a little uneasy about new situations. Now imagine if you were a young child, or a child with special needs {autism especially}. Talk about overwhelming. I can’t even imagine how uncomfortable it must feel for them! One thing that I have found that is so incredibly helpful for autistic students is what some call a “transition” box. Where I work we call it their “hobby” box. Basically, parents share or teachers observe what toys, activities and people the student finds enjoyable. It can be anything from tickles and hugs to music and toys. Once identified these items can be used during particularly stressful times for the student, such as transitions. These items will make the transition feel a little less scary because the new situation will include things that they like {transition/hobby box items}. Another great post about this concept can be found at The Inclusive Church.

Source: The Inclusive Church

I think this concept is great for autistic/special needs students but I think it can also be applicable to those students who might be shy in new situations. How do you think it could be incorporated into the classroom?

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01912117528655414246noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4852170201325394014.post-49124639984740928492012-08-20T21:34:00.001-05:002012-08-20T21:34:28.638-05:00Math Monday is BAACK!!: Animal Plate Math
Hello bloggy friends!! I use them ALL YEAR long in math small groups for kinder! Let me show you:

Now do you see? The ears become parts and the mouth/face area becomes the whole! At the beginning of the year, we count into the whole section. So I might say the number 9 and the kiddos count 9 manipulatives into the whole section. After this is mastered, we count into the whole and then count into the part sections. So they might put 9 manipulatives in the whole and then we practice putting combinations of manipulatives in the part sections (ears) to make nine. They could have 4 in one ear and 5 in the other, 1 in one ear and 8 in the other, etc. We talk about how the parts make up the whole. Then, we practice backwards. I dictate “Put 3 in one ear, put 4 in the other.” Then the kiddos have to put the same number in the whole. So they would count how many are in both ears TOGETHER and put 7 in the whole section. After this skill is mastered, we practice filling both parts and the whole and saying a math sentence to match. So if there were 3 and 4 in the parts and 7 in the whole I would model and students would say “3 and 4 make 7.” Then once this is mastered we use “plus” and “equals.” So they would say “3 plus 4 equals 7.” Then, we would do fact families using these! It’s so great because there is the background knowledge of each step using the plates. The kiddos become familiar with them and know what the parts are & what the steps are! So in case that was confusing, here are the different levels I use with these fun plates:

1. Count into whole section.
2. Count into whole section. Then count same number into part sections.
Ex: 7 in whole, 3 and 4 in parts
3. Count into parts sections. Then count same number into whole section.
4. Fill in parts and whole. Say “part AND part MAKES whole.”
Ex: “3 and 4 makes 7”
5. Fill in parts and whole. Say “part PLUS part EQUALS whole.”
Ex: “3 plus 4 equals 7”
6. Fill in parts and whole. Talk about fact families!!

Now for the freebie! I have also found while working with these it is great to have some type of recording sheet for the kiddos to keep track. Especially at the beginning! So of course, you get them for FREE! THANKS!!*****
That was EXHAUSTED! Well I’m not quite the old lady, but I am quite tired this week. All I will say is that God always leads you right where you need to be! Sometimes you are rerouted, but it all works out in the end.
But, there was an old lady who swallowed a bunch of stuff…like shells, chicks, books, bells, snow, a clover, leaves, a bat… the list goes on and on. Lucky for you, I’ve created some fun and simple sequencing activities for all of these fun books by Lucille Colandro and I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie by Alison Jackson.
In my store, I have added all the sequencing activities for the individual books {including the newest…There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Books!!} Click on each to head to the page!
Teaching is a calling and a mission field. Some of us have students that don’t get enough love and attention at home, some don’t have enough food or care at home, some have those things but because parents are so busy they don’t get the attention they desire and deserve. Some of the students in our classroom feel safer and more “at home” in our classroom than their actual homes. This is why our classroom becomes our mission field!

As far as the calling, I can say that when I am not teaching I feel out of balance…like I’m not doing what I’ve been called to do. You see, we have a much more important job than simply teaching skills that are tested. We have the responsibility to the hearts and minds of countless students. The way we interact with our students helps shape their life skills, self esteem, social interactions, and on and on. Seems like a lot, huh? But we do it with a smile in our face and genuine love in our hearts for our students.

At the beginning of each year, I spend time reminding myself of this responsibility and calling. I always, always listen to Nichole Nordeman’s song Legacy. The line that lingers in my mind goes like this: “I want to leave a legacy. How will they remember me? Did I choose to love?…” {Check out the video at the end of the post.} Every copy made, activity created, paper graded, running record taken, assessment administered, etc. should be oozing with our love for our students. This song reminds me of this. I want each and every student that walks through my door to leave feeling loved and knowing that they can conquer the world.

The other day I came across a quote on Pinterest {I know, I’m addicted!} that spurred me to write this post and create this little freebie poster.

{Download HERE}

Wow. What a statement by Ann Landers. So often we get wrapped up in the papers, the meetings, the standards, etc. that we forget that our ultimate goal is to help these students be successful in life! Not just on a test or paper, but in LIFE! I love this quote because it’s a great reminder that it’s not what we do but what we teach our kiddos to do for themselves that is important. Those moments when a student figures out how to solve a math problem, read a book, or work together as a team…those moments when the light bulb goes off and their mind is racing…those are the moments that matter. The moments when those kiddos KNOW that they can do it themselves—those are the moments that are shaping them into successful human beings! This quote also reminds me that I don’t want my classroom to function like a lecture. I want my classroom to be inquiry and discovery based AS MUCH as possible! I want to be facilitator as much as possible. I want my students to become learners and to LOVE learning. I ultimately want them to be life-long lovers of learning.

So as you begin this new school year, amidst the paperwork, open houses, assessments, and meetings, take a moment {or a lot of moments} to think about the heart of teaching. Think about how you want your students to feel every day in your classroom. Think about how you want your students to remember you and your classroom. Set a goal and go for it! Though none of us are perfect, and there will definitely be distractions, strive to do your best for those little hearts in your room this year. I know I will be focusing on the hearts of my little ones a lot as I begin this school year. Join me!

Nichole Nordeman-Legacy

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01912117528655414246noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4852170201325394014.post-20133143078847425252012-07-28T10:52:00.001-05:002012-07-28T10:52:07.653-05:00A Year in Writing! {FREEBIE}
Need a way to keep track of writing samples throughout the year? Do you end up having random writing samples in piles? How about a book for each student that is put together at the beginning of the year. Then it can be sent home as a sort of memory book at the end of the year!

Here’s a little freebie pack that has a page for each month! I’ve included a cover page for Kinder, 1st and 2nd grade. The writing pages are also included in black and white or color. There are always some kiddos who want to write more, so I included a page that you can print off for them that is simply a page of lined paper.

Click the picture above or HERE to head over and download it for free! I am in LOVE with any and all picture books!

In no particular order:

Ish by Peter H. Reynolds: I love this book for the beginning of the year for kinders. Before focusing on writing, I always focus on drawing with details. This book is great for those kiddos whose pictures HAVE to be perfect! It sweetly portrays that every drawing is beautiful, even if it is an “ish” drawing.

Big Words for Little People by Jamie Lee Curtis & Laura Cornell:I am a firm believer that kinder friends don’t need to use “baby” words. They are so very capable of knowing big words and using them too! So many kinders are a little afraid of big words and one of my goals has always been to make them comfortable with big words. This book is a fun, rhyming way to show them that big words are fun to learn!

The Mine-O-Saur by Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen: I know I’m not the only teacher who has experienced a few “mine-o-saurs” in the classroom! This book is a great and fun illustration of what happens when kiddos are “mine-o-saurs.” It’s always a MUST read at the beginning of the year for me! The first half (or so) of the book is where he acts like a “mine-o-saur.” After reading this I stop and discuss how he is feeling (lonely & like he has no friends). We discuss why he feels this way and why no one wants to be his friend. Then I have the kiddos brainstorm how he can make friends. After reading the rest of the book we see the ways he does make friends! It’s something my kiddos would refer to all year long!

Leo the Late Bloomer by Robert Kraus:This is a sweet, sweet story about a “late bloomer.” He can’t do many of the things that his friends can and gets discouraged. But by the end of the book he realizes he can do it, it just took him a little longer! LOVE the lesson in this story.

Those are just a FEW of my favorites. I am guilty of having a very LARGE children’s book collection! :)

Enjoy! And check out the other links in this linky party…some incredible books! I’d love to hear what your favorites are too! Leave a comment and share :)

DON’T FORGET: 500 FOLLOWER GIVEAWAY ENDS TONIGHT {click on the image below to enter!}

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01912117528655414246noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4852170201325394014.post-57506830013942217192012-07-15T20:44:00.000-05:002012-07-16T22:59:27.747-05:00Chicka Chicka…

This is one of my VERY favorite books to read at the beginning of the school year when the focus is on letters and letter sounds! You can hit on so many different letter concepts with this: ABC order, beginning sounds, upper/lower matching, letter characteristics (tall, short, etc.). So naturally, I created a little activity or two to go with it. Lucky for you…it’s a FREEBIE! {Click the picture below to download!}

This little freebie pack has: 2.5x2.5 upper, lower and picture cards. These are great for pocket charts or centers! Then I made up a few recording sheets as well. There are three upper/lower matching recording sheets. I love differentiating this kind of stuff! One sheet gives uppercase and students write lowercase, one gives lowercase and students write uppercase, and one is a mixture of upper & lower give and students write what is missing. There are also 2 beginning sounds matching recording sheets. One has the pictures in ABC order and one has the pictures in random order. For those kiddos that already know ABC order by heart the random order sheet is a better gauge of whether they understand the beginning sounds concept.

Another FAVORITE thing of mine to do with this book is to show the video from YouTube! They LOVE…I mean L-O-V-E the song!

I know that I was guilty of it for a long time. I would try to throw in a Readers Theater on weeks that were "off" and we couldn't do our normal routines. I would talk to the kids about "reading like they were talking" but didn't focus a lot on it.

A few years ago I went to the National Conference for Literacy Learning put on by SDE. I heard Tim Rasinski speak. Everything he said just made so much sense. I bought a couple resources from him and the ideas started flowing. Because I did reading instruction with a large group of students who were below grade level, I needed to try some different ideas and the ideas I got from this workshop were great.

One big idea I introduced was using the Fry sight word phrases. Previously, I had used sight words, but hadn't done much instruction with the phrasing. I took each list and broke it down into 4 chunks. I then created a Powerpoint for each chunk. When students finished with their work early, they went over the computer, and read through the PPT with the phrases. They would whisper them to themselves. When students felt they could read the phrases with fluency, they called me over to listen. If they read them well, they moved to the next list. I made it a challenge for my students by offering small rewards when they made new achievements. For example, the first student to make it all the way through would get a new book of their choice from me. Because these were struggling students, I was happy to use a book as the dangling carrot for their hard work.

Another method I used, with my younger students, were games with the Fry phrases. I created a baseball game that I used in my small groups. I've updated the game and posted it in my TpT store. You can get the game for List 1 of the Fry Phrases for FREE. Just click the pictures below.

I hope I've been able to give you a few ideas on how you can use the Fry Sight Word Phrases in your fluency instruction!

Tessa Maguire is a former reading teacher and differentiated instruction coach. It's Tangelia from Buggy In Kindergarten here! I am so excited to be blogging over here for Lacey today! Lacey, thank you for having me over here at your wonderful blog!

When Lacey and I started talking about me guest blogging, we discussed the topic of classroom management.
The first thing that I thought of was behavior. What do I do to help keep those little <strike>munchkins</strike> angels behaving? Well my advice is to first MODEL, MODEL, MODEL those behaviors that you want them to do. Explicitly teach them what they are supposed to do and what they should NOT do. Think about how you want them to act in centers, during carpet time, while they are working independently.
In my class I expect my students to listen, to follow directions the FIRST time given, to work quietly, to put things back where they belong, and to keep their hands to themselves. Every morning we go through these rules. We talk about WHAT they mean and WHY they are important!
My students know the rules.... HOWEVER that does not mean that they always follow them. So what do I do in this case? Well I am a firm believer in warnings. The first thing I always do is to give a warning. Sometimes this is all that child needs and their behavior is much better the rest of the day! But then you have those <strike>stinkers</strike> students that just don't get it. They keep repeating the same behavior. In this case, my students have to mark a star. Each star has its own consequence.
If they mark one star they lose 5 minutes of recess. Two stars 10 minutes of recess. Three stars they lose 15 minutes of recess, and if behavior is disrupting class progress, they go to timeout. At four stars they have no recess and have a letter going home to their parents about their behavior.
I used this system mainly because I thought I HAD to! This is the behavior system that all of the teachers on my team use. However it just doesn't work for me. This year I am changing my behavior system to something that I am much more excited about!
Some of you probably use it! It is the clip chart system! (Click on the picture below to get your very own copy of my clip chart system for FREE!)

Here are the reasons that I love this type of behavior system.
1) It focuses on the behavior you WANT to see instead of just the behaviors you DON'T want to see!
In the past it has felt like all I was able to focus on is the negative behavior in the classroom. This means that these children get the attention. Yes, it is negative attention, but it is attention nonetheless. Using this behavior chart, I will be able to pick out and praise and reward those positive behaviors that I want to see.
2) It gives students to ability to climb back up if they have had a bad morning but a great afternoon!
A student's behavior is affected by so many factors. Their life at home may be negative. They could have seen something on the bus that affected them. There are so many things that we do not see in a child's life. I believe that sometimes these things cause student's to misbehave. So say a student comes in one morning and begins acting up, you warn them, maybe you give them another warning, but they don't quit that negative behavior. They have to move a clip. Once they move that clip they think about their behavior, they realize that it was inappropriate, and they become that angel that you knew they could be. They begin exhibiting positive behaviors, that child may move their clip up. Therefore reinforcing those positive behaviors and encouraging them to do better.
3) It offers POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT instead of just NEGATIVE REINFORCEMENT!
If you are looking for students that are behaving like they should be they DESERVE to be praised. Letting them move their clip UP reinforces their positive behavior. I LOVE this!
4) All students start on green "Ready to Learn" EVERYDAY!
Each and every day a child deserves to begin fresh... to have a clean slate. Using this behavior chart, each and every day students get to SEE that they are on green. Seeing this shows them that "Today is a new day."
I am really excited to get to use this new chart in my classroom this year. I look forward to rewarding those students with positive behavior instead of just focusing on negative behaviors!
Lacey, thanks again for having me today! I hope all of you enjoyed hearing my take on the Clip Chart Behavior System. I would love to see you over at my blog, Buggy In Kindergarten!
-Tangelia

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01912117528655414246noreply@blogger.com7
